Health Management Advisor - Papua New Guinea
AUSTRALIAN DOCTORS INTERNATIONAL (ADI) is a non-profit, non-government medical aid organisation run by volunteers. We have no religious or political affiliations. ADI is a signatory to the Australian Council for International Development Code of Conduct, approved by AusAID.
Our goal is to improve the health of people in the remote Western Province of Papua New Guinea, the province nearest Australia.
We aim to implement a three-pronged strategy:
1. Deploy volunteer doctors to remote communities.
2. Run treatment and control programs on malaria, filariasis and elephantiasis, HIV and AIDS, and leprosy.
3. Educate and train health workers.
PNG has the poorest state of health in the Pacific region (WHO 2005), especially in rural areas where health services are deteriorating and difficult to access, or completely closed down.
Communicable diseases, including pneumonia, malaria, tuberculosis, diarrheal diseases, meningitis and, increasingly, HIV/AIDS, remain the leading cause of morbidity and account for around 50% of mortality (WHO 2005).
